In brief:

The Technology Monitoring Day brought together 45 participants from the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and Innosuisse to present the results of three years of research undertaken by the Technology Monitoring Team based at EPFL. The purpose of the event was also to strengthen collaboration with EPFL and facilitate the transfer of science and technology within the Federal Administration.

On August 28, the Technology Monitoring (TM) Team of the CYD Campus of armasuisse Science and Technology (S+T) organised a work visit on the EPFL campus, giving participants a full overview of the activities, research projects and partnerships of the CYD Campus through laboratory visits and tailored sessions. The TM Team specialises in analysing emerging and disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and space-based technologies and evaluating the implications for cybersecurity and defence. Thus, it acts as a sovereign technology observatory. The TM Day also contributed to measure 4 (analysis of trends, risks and dependencies) of the National Cyberstrategy NCS coordinated by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Highlights of the day included:

  • A presentation in the Center for Digital Trust (C4DT) on data protection and cybersecurity;
  • A visit to the BOLO Museum, which covers the history of IT, digital culture and video gaming and explores what lies ahead;
  • Two talks at the CYD Campus in Lausanne on quantum computers and superintelligence;
  • An insight session at the EPFL AI Center focusing on the technical challenges of artificial intelligence;
  • A visit to the laboratories of the Center for Quantum Science and Engineering (QSE).

Conclusion and perspectives

The day ended with a networking session on the EPFL campus, an ideal environment for holding discussions and sharing experiences. The entire TM Day served to strengthen the synergies between academic players and the armasuisse S+T staff while opening new prospects for innovative projects. Another edition of the Technology Monitoring Day is planned for 2026.
