MALS Plus - An important milestone has been reached.

The installation of the precision approach radars was completed at the end of April 2021 at Sion airport. The Air Force delivered the test report «OT&E PAR Sion - Trial Report» to armasuisse on 27 April 2021. The operational tests analysed in this report were positively assessed. As soon as the customer Armed Forces Staff has found the system to be «suitable for use», the last precision approach radar can also be handed over for operational use.

Guarantee credits for the project «MALS Plus» to install military approach control systems at the military airports in Payerne, Emmen, Locarno, Meiringen and Sion were granted for the armament programme 09.

The approach control systems consist of three components: A precision approach radar (PAR - Precision Approach Radar), consisting of the sensor and the display, an airport surveillance radar (ASR - Airport Surveillance Radar), consisting of the sensor and the display, as well as the direction finders (DF - Direction Finder). The direction finders were installed at the airports in 2017 and function perfectly.

The precision approach radar consists of a sensor from the company Leonardo in Italy as well as a display from the company Frequentis Comsoft GmbH in Germany and replaces the current QUAD radar at the military airports.

Surveillance radars: These are currently with the Air Force in Payerne in the operational test phase and should be ready for transfer to the customer in mid-2021.
