Measurement of meteorological parameters using drones

At armasuisse W + T, tests using drones have been performed to record local weather parameters. During test campaigns, the advantages and disadvantages of these «flying weather stations» compared to meteorological balloons were evaluated.

A Swiss company has integrated sensors specially designed for temperature, wind direction, air pressure and humidity. These «flying weather stations» can record meteorological parameters along a predefined flightpath and store them with the precise location information. Meteorological parameters for ballistic simulation models or for calculating the propagation of electromagnetic signals in the atmosphere are of great interest in the field of defence. Theses early experiments have demonstrated very good data quality with high spatial and temporal resolution. Further testing will be needed to see if this meteorologcal data collection can complement or replace today's weather balloons.
