Are line-of-sight and radar compatible?

With the current density of communication media and radar, the question arises as to whether the two formats are compatible with one another. This issue is compounded by the fact that some devices use similar frequencies.

Today, usage density for communication media and radar frequencies is on the increase. This is why BAKOM and Armed Forces Command Support Organisation Frequency management (FUB FM) commissioned armasuisse Science and Technology (S+T) to examine their compatibility more closely.

The Communication (STC) and Sensor Technology (STS) departments worked in close collaboration to analyse radar and line-of-sight, with both formats broadcasting signals in similar frequency bands. STS provided a radar signal generator in a laboratory setting, and the experts at STC examined possible disruptions to line-of-sight units.

S+T has the latest measuring technologies at its disposal, which it can use to perform this compatibility analysis. The findings acquired from this laboratory trial will be essential for future procurement projects.
